What is an EDC or LDC?

An EDC is an Electric Distribution Company.  Sometimes referred to also as an LDC (local distribution company) or as the “wires” company, this is a subsidiary of your traditional electric utility connected to your building. The names are familiar: PECO, PP&L, Duquesne Light, PSE&G, ConED, JCPL, CP&L, BSE&G, etc.

They are responsible for basic delivery of electric power to your facility, plus line maintenance, service restoration in the event of power outages, meter reading, service upgrades, and connection / disconnection to your home or business.

In a deregulated state, the EDC no longer makes money, nor cares who your EGS (Electricity Generation Supplier) is.  The EDC simply delivers and maintains your service.
